Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair!

Over the years I have grown increasingly obsessed with my hair. After developing stress alopecia when I was younger, I have tried pretty much everything to make it grow back as shiny and thick as it was before. I have had micro ring extensions (biggest mistake of my life), tape extensions and clip-ins in a desperate attempt to make it seem like I still have luscious locks. The one thing I have learned is that the only thing extensions do is ruin my hair even more. I have very very very very very fine hair, which is very very very very straight. I once had a hairdresser ask why I had straightened my hair before I came for my appointment… I hadnt. I bet you’re thinking *OMG IM SO WELL JELLY!* – Dont be, I cant do a damn shit with it. I curl it and about 20 mins later its straight and flat again. I guess my dreams of being a Victoria secret angel are over. (You know, because thats whats holding that dream back – not the fact Im in the double digit dress size scale)

In this post I briefly mentioned that I am currently taking not 1, not 2 but 3 different kinds of hair supplements. They are all supposed to be all natural, and all are supposed to enhance not just your hair but also your skin and nails. In 3-4 months I fully intend to walking around glowing skin, talons for nails and Rapunzel’s hair dragging like a vail behind me.. I have never really believed the fact that supplements actually help, but as I have never tried either so I figured I have nothing to lose. Well besides money but Im P Diddy anyway.

Just remember, there is no such thing as a magical cure for anything, and none of these supplements claim that they single handily have solved or reversed thinning hair. All they say is that with a healthy and balanced diet and life style they may help your hair grow stronger in the future.

Spirulina

Spirulina is being widely used for promoting hair growth and to combat hair problems like thinning hair and baldness. Spirulina contains amino acids, essential fatty acids, vitamin A and beta-carotene, all of which are great for hair.

Spirulina is an organism that grows in both fresh and salt water. It is a type of bacteria called cyanobacterium, which is often referred to as blue-green algae. Just like plants, cyanobacteria can produce energy out of sunlight, via the process called photosynthesis. Spirulina was consumed by the Aztecs back in the day. A standard daily dose of spirulina is 1-3 grams, but doses of up to 10 grams per day have been used effectively.

It is actually quite amazing how nutritious it is.
A single tablespoon (7 grams) of dried spirulina powder contains:

  • Protein: 4 grams.
  • Vitamin B1 (Thiamin): 11% of the RDA.
  • Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin): 15% of the RDA.
  • Vitamin B3 (Niacin): 4% of the RDA.
  • Copper: 21% of the RDA.
  • Iron: 11% of the RDA.
  • It also contains decent amounts of magnesium, potassium and manganese, and small amounts of almost every other nutrient that we need.

This is coming with only 20 calories, and 1.7 grams of digestible carbohydrate – now that I can get down with.

Collagen

Collagen is a protein found in connective tissues of the body. It is significant in making certain parts of the body such as nails strong and is also an important factor in joint health. Collagen supplements come in various forms. One of the most common is called Gelatin. For a long time Gelatin has been used in collagen replacement and has been thought to strengthen nails and hair. Individuals suffering from conditions such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis often take collagen supplements to replace collagen in the joints. The collagen supplements mostly used in such a case has chicken collagen as an active ingredient. There are also collagen creams that are applied on the skin to help reduce wrinkles and lines.

During aging, hair and nails gradually become more brittle, hair breakage occurs, nails are thinner. This is, in part, a result of the reduced collagen production in the body. Collagen is a key component to new hair growth and hair quality. Supplemental collagen can increase the hair shaft, improve hair and nail growth, and improve its quality to reduce breakage during the life of the hair.

And just to add some extra I also have decided to try Hair-Vit/Biotin for the next three months. Hair-vit capsules are specially formulated to provide vital nutrients required for healthy looking hair.  The pills contain B Vitamins and essential Amino Acids to help nurture the texture, thickness and colour of your hair
Each pill contains B1, B2, B3, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin B12, Biotin, Pantothenic Acid, Calcium, Phosphorus, Iron, Zinc, Choline Bitartrate, Copper, Inositol, Manganese, Para Amino Benzoic Acid (PABA), Yeast, Hydrolysed Gelatine Powder, Lecithin, L-Cysteine Hydrochloride,  aaand DL-Methionine. You know just to name them all. I mainly take this for the Biotin, which according to the girl at the pharmacy was the new shit in hair supplements. Although apparently taking too much of it can have the opposite effect. Again peeps, everything in moderation!
